I will never forget when I turned my life from a question mark to a comma.
Today, I am an award-winning author, consultant, and entrepreneur that has built over 20 businesses in over 20 years. But, when I think about the road to my success, and why I created You Are a CEO, I really have to go back to my own personal story.
I've gone through many traumatic events as a child. My parents divorced when I was very young. I ended up going to six different elementary schools as a young child. Even more traumatic was when I witnessed my mother become a victim of domestic violence. I was a poor latch-key kid from a bad neighborhood riddled with violence. I will never forget the car ride that felt like a lifetime when my Mom and I had to escape out of the house and try to make it to a shelter for battered women to seek help. Looking around the room and seeing the eyes of other young children who I could tell had the same fears and uncertainty that I did, was both refreshing and alarming.
At that time in my life, I questioned if I would ever be able to achieve anything and rise above my circumstances. Would I ever become anything? Would I ever be able to make anything of myself?
I later realized that all I had come through was not the end of my journey, merely a comma that transitioned me from who I had been to who I would become. I have felt fear at the highest level, and I have seen trauma in some of its ugliest forms. I should have been a statistic! Nevertheless, it was through these experiences that I learned how to appreciate a better way and unlock my ability to achieve at the highest level.
The turning point in my life…was a change in my environment.
As I began to go about life, I continued to go through struggles, academically and otherwise. I never knew the long-lasting effect it would have on me to have a childhood that was so stressful, unpredictable, and ever changing. Growing up this way you develop bad habits and find it hard to create consistency and purpose in life because life itself has become something you have learned cannot be fully controlled. All though I had many hidden talents, I was on a path to many disappointments and unfilled dreams.
Despite the challenges of my early years, I consider it a true blessing from God to have had a couple that became godparents to me and took me under their wings. They gave me the love, life skills, and positive example that I needed that would change my life forever. The experiences I had with my godparents showed me another way of life. This was the change in my environment that I so desperately needed! For the first time, I actually had a choice; a choice to choose what type of life I wanted.
This choice created a crossroads for me. This is what I call the “CEO Moment.” These are moments in time in our life when we have to make an executive decision that no one can make for us. An executive decision that has to do with the most important business in the world, the business of you. The paths we choose become our destiny and our decisions set the stage for the type of opportunities we can pursue.
It was so powerful to me to see how a change in environment and the right influences changed my way of thinking and impacted what I was able to do. I believe in determination and the willpower to press through things. As an accomplished basketball player, I have always seen the connection between a strong mind and creating real success. However, when it comes to tougher things than sports like breaking habits, overcoming disappointments, making the right decision, and achieving career and business goals, you need more than willpower. Environment is much stronger than willpower, and when you get them both working together it is a thing of beauty.
From struggle to award-winning author, consultant, and CEO! I took this new outlook and began to turn my life around 180 degrees!
I began to improve academically, and even went on to obtain my MBA in Operations and Business Management!
Professionally, I went on to be hand-picked by Akio Toyoda to lead several business endeavors in Japan, North America, and Canada. I led technology implementations, change management programs, and business operations for global companies. I became an expert in Lean Management and went on to create my own business system called Value-Centered Management.
Out of all of the wonderful accomplishments I have experienced, I am more than overwhelmed with joy to have started and managed dozens of multi-million dollar businesses and to have built an experienced and talented team that has been with me for over 20 years. This has given me a lot of experience about how to tackle the difficult balance of entrepreneur, CEO, friend, husband, father figure, and many other roles all while helping thousands of others achieve more in their lives. By taking my lean management background (one of the most powerful approaches to using systems to create massive benefits to any operation), my personal journey, and helping so many people throughout my career, I was able to develop tools, programs, and education that help people make lasting changes and become high achievers.
As an award-winning published author and trainer, I have been a featured keynote speaker at thousands of events across the globe and have been a contributor on major networks such as Fox Business news, CBS, and NBC. It is an amazing feeling when people start to recognize you for your thoughts and ideas and yet I always know that I am still growing. I have tried to use my unwavering desire for personal growth to inspire everyone that I can to commit to the same. I have learned that this mindset coupled with the right tools will unlock unbelievable possibilities. The reality is that business is hard, but life is even harder. This is why I am so grateful to still be married to my wonderful wife after over 23 years. Marriage is not easy (and we got married very young), but I feel like this has been another testimonial of the things that I have learned about being a high performer. It takes something to confront all that life throws at you (including all of the ups and the downs) and still find a way to succeed. My life has been far from perfect, but I have learned you can approach life perfectly (which includes how to handle it when things go all wrong), and when you do, good things happen.
As you can see, my journey had been really unbelievable!! But, in all of that struggle and success, I never lost sight of who I am, who I'm not, and where I came from. In fact, it is my life experiences that motivate me daily to give away the things that I have learned to as many people as I can. I feel a deep passion to see everyone live their best life, rise above challenges, and have the fulfillment that we all long for.

There are many reasons I love being a part of the You Are a CEO, but one of the most important reasons for me have been identifying how fear works in me personally and how to use it as fuel for courage. The Success iQ created by Michael E. Parker has a customized plan to identify fear in me. In this assessment, I was able to identify fears rooted in difficult experiences I had not ever been able to speak to anyone about, let alone think honestly about to myself. Through You Are a CEO I learned that fear is paralyzing, so knowing that simple fact was very liberating. I grew up in a very isolated way because of an immigration situation I lived through for 10 years in my teens and early twenties. I was perfectly comfortable not being around people under the excuse of safety. Isolation is safe, but it also hinders growth.
